Short walk with X10
Earlier this week, I went for an evening walk in the neighborhood where I live, with my companion, the Fujifilm X10 compact camera. There isn’t much to photograph here, especially in winter, and this time the weather was cold. At the beginning of the walk, it was even snowing almost horizontally because of the strong wind.
But nothing ventured, nothing gained. The X10 is a small camera that fits conveniently in the pocket of a winter coat. A great place for a little camera on a snowy, freezing day, as it’s at least somewhat sheltered from the elements. Thanks to its compact size, it also doesn’t attract much attention from passersby, allowing me to shoot in peace without anyone asking, “Is that a Nikon or a Canon?”

As I mentioned, the weather wasn’t particularly photogenic. The sunset was already behind me, and the evening was getting darker. The earlier snowfall had covered everything under a fresh layer of snow. However, there was still enough light for me to shoot with the X10 at full aperture without having to raise the ISO much from its lowest setting.
The shooting conditions weren’t exactly ideal for a small camera with a small sensor. It would have been better to bring the X-Pro or the A7 instead, but I like to give all my gear a chance to get some use—can’t let them gather dust or risk being labeled just a collector!

Toward the end of my walk, I moved onto a residential street with several run-down houses. I don’t know if they’re abandoned, but I’ve never seen lights on or names on the mailboxes. On the other hand, every now and then, a path appears in the snow leading to a yard, with fresh footprints. I’d guess that the local youth sneak in to explore them at night. Urban explorer might be the correct term for them.
